Beginner's Abstract Painting Class

Before being quarantined, social distancing, obeying the stay-at-home orders, and all that jazz, I would teach a Beginner’s Abstract Painting Class a couple of times a month. Obviously, that’s not happening anymore, so I, like many others took it online!

Same but different

My online class is the same structure as the classes I teach in person. The only difference is it’s online. You can go at your own pace and aren’t limited to a typical 1.5-hour time frame like you would be during the in-person classes.

No supplies, no problem!

If you don’t have art supplies don’t let that stop you from flexing your creative muscles. I put together this Amazon list of art supplies specifically for this class. These are all suggested items, more details below.

If you want everything delivered to you in one fell swoop, this painting kit has everything you need and will for sure last you far beyond just my abstract painting class. That’s another plus of doing this online, you will have supplies to make more than just one painting!

what ya need

1. Canvas or sturdy piece of paper to paint on

2. Acrylic paint - the colors red, yellow, blue, white, black will make any color you want. But feel free to get colors that are pre-mixed if you don’t want to bother with mixing

3. Paintbrushes - one singular brush will suffice, but a mix of a small, medium, and large brush will allow you to create a more dynamic painting

4. Paint palette - a paper plate, a piece of cardboard, or any flat surface that you can mix paint on

5. Water jar - to dip your brushes into, and to help you mix paint

6. Paper towels or washcloth, dishtowel, etc.

What you will learn

First we find painting inspiration. We use images like this fun, puffy, pink sweater as a jumping off point for creating an abstract painting. I walk you through finding quality inspiration images and what to do with them once you find them.

The inspiration is just the beginning. I’ll take you through step-by-step what to do, including looking at your painting from different perspectives, asking thoughtful, art critiquing questions about your painting, and loottttss more.
