April Round-up: Creative at-home Activities

For the remainder of quarantine, I’m determined to come up with creative activities to do at home. Of course I’ve been painting, but for my friends out there that don’t have a bunch of painting supplies lying around like me, you can still be creative.

Right now, we are going on week 4 of the stay-at-home order, and I’m getting more antsy to leave the house by the day. BUT when I’m engrossed in a creative project, it doesn’t feel as hard to stay at home. Below are some creative suggestions while you’re at home. Enjoy.

iPhone Photography

It’s no secret the cameras on our phones are better than the digital cameras we used to take photos with in middle school (speaking mostly for myself here). Take advantage of your nice camera now, so when you’re back out in the real world, you’ll have some practice snapping quality photos. Check out this site along with this one for tips on capturing better images.

2. Create a Sculpture

I found this cute little sculpture prompt from a teacher on Instagram. The prompt basically has you find things around your house and make a sculpture from it. Big thanks to all the teachers out there, AMIRIGHT?!?! This teacher may have created this prompt for kids, but if you’ve never sculpted anything, I think it’s a great activity for adults too.

3.

Fine Tune your Chef Skills

I love to cook. Even if some of the things I make turn out terribly. I truly enjoy the process and the creativity of it. There is no better time to cook than right now!! Start with Samin Nosrat’s book, Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat, it’s AMAZING. Once you get the basics down you can get creative with your cooking skills. Besides her book, there’s plenty of tutorials out there that will help you with the building blocks of cooking, like how to chop on onion! Or this list of how to make stock, gravy, crush garlic, and more.

4. Paint with Gems

PaintGem is like a paint by numbers but with cute little gem beads instead of paint. They have lots of different photos you can “paint", they even give you the option to upload your own photo and create a custom piece of gem art.

5. Quick Draw

This site is similar to playing Pictionary, but instead of playing with a group of people, you play online with “Al”. He gives you a prompt and you have 20 seconds to draw it. Even though Al isn’t a human, he still recognizes your drawing and lets you know if he can tell what it is or not.

6. Press Flowers

Now that it really feels like spring, and you’re probably spending some portion of your day to take a walk, why not spend those walks to literally stop and smell the roses? This flower pressing kit on Etsy gives you all the tools to make your own pressed flower art, same with this one on Amazon.

7. Hone in Your DJ Skills

Well kind of. Curate a Spotify playlist and share it! You have all the time in the world to finally listen to that song or band your friend has been telling you about. Maybe their suggestion will make the cut. Here’s some suggestions on making your playlist great.

8. Fashion Design

This book has plenty of prompts and step-by-step instructions for drawing and personalizing your style. If you’ve ever been curious about the fashion design process, this is an easy, fun easy way to get started, and find your own style.
